My story…

I have always worked with my hands, it’s an expression of who I am. From the time I was eight sewing on mom’s sewing machine, or helping hand build our home’s cabinets, I intuitively knew how to use the tools.

Many years later as an adult, on a flyfishing trip with my father-in-law, I realized I needed a way to hold the flyrod hands free. The entire fishing trip my mind was fixated on making a flyrod holder. After the fishing trip, I created a flyrod holder using a vintage fly vest and some leather I received from a friend.

I used the remaining leather to make a key fab holder, and watch band, and reupholstered our car's console, as I was brought up to be resourceful and was not going to let any of the leather go to waste.

I was captivated. Working with the leather on the sewing machine I loved the humming of its sound and how the awl cuts through the hide when hand stitching. It was nostalgic and brought me back to sewing with mom when I was younger. A moment of awakening began; working with my hands is who I am and who I have always been.

Our name.

I was adopted into the O’Brien family as an infant. My adopted mother taught me to sew and as an adult I discovered that my biological mother also did seamstess work. My biological mother’s last name is Miramontes. One day I was sharing this with an individual and she said that's a beautiful name. Mira means to view and montes means mountains. Thus, your name means a place with a view of the mountains.

Every place that I have lived has been mountainous and had beautiful views of mountains. The mountains have always been a place of refuge to me.

What better name to call my business than Miramontes Leather.
